Oedipus was known for being extremely intelligent and was very talented at solving riddles. To earn the right to be King of Thebes, Oedipus solved a riddle, which as a result removed a plague from the land. In the play, Oedipus is again faced with another plague in his kingdom and this time the riddle was to discover who murdered King Laius. Using his intelligence, he again solves the riddle, but tragically for Oedipus he discovers that he is the murderer and he ultimately has to punish himself for the crime. Throughout his search all the people around him were urging him to use caution in his search, and even his wife Jocasta ordered him to abandon his quest, citing that the oracle was mistaken and was a hoax. Tragically, Oedipus would not compromise and he continued his search until finall y his diligence in his quest led to his downfall. Oedipus was a confident and intelligent king who worked hard for the people and would stop at nothing to save his beloved Thebes and the people who resided there. Metropolitan Museum of Art essays For my cultural event I chose to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I've always, even while I lived in Portland, had a wish to visit it and to experience the feeling that was so popular among those who have been there before. I often imagined what it would be like, but when on Saturday the 14th of October I actually went there for the first time I was speechless. It was a lot more then what I pictured it to be. I spent 4 hours there and in that time I was only able to see the first floor and briefly run through the second floor. As I walked in and turned left, I found myself among the most beautiful sculptures by artists not only of American heritage but also from around the world. I saw the sculpture of Adam by Tullio Lombardo, Alheus and Arethusa by Battista Lorenzi, Andromeda and the Monster by Domenico Gaidi, Ugolino and his Sons, my most favorite of them all due to the reality of the expressions on the faces of the sculpture and the amazing detailed work that Jean Baptise Carpealle has done. Those were just a few of all that I saw, the ones that got stuck in my memory because they were so amazing. From that gallery, I went into another, a gallery that holds rooms from the 19th and 18th centuries, with all their ancient furniture. Rooms filled with a completely different atmosphere then my own or the one that I am used to. Gorgeous chairs, rugs, paintings invited me to touch them, to feel their culture, to hear the noises that they would make, but of course forbidden to be touched or to even come close to them. After that I went through gorgeous galleries of African Art, which took me into a completely different world of their own culture. A considerable number of judges are reported saying that the United Kingdom law is in a â€Å"sorry condition â€Å"regarding this legal aspect and that it is only the Parliament or the Lordship House that can remedy the situation.3 This paper focuses on these arguments by analyzing a case law, legal issues involved in it, and the legal issues involved in the case. Particularly, the paper will focus on Shogun Finance Ltd v Hudson [2003] UKHL 62 and the legal issues involved in the situation described by Lord Nicholls of Birkenhead. The law of contract describes a mistake as a belief erroneously created in a contract that specific facts relating to all or some parts of the contract are true whereas they are not. Usually, if such a mistake is found to exist in a contract, then that particular contract is rendered void.4 Lord Denning, in the case of Lewis v Avery held that a contract can be void if the plaintiff can prove that at the time of entering the agreement, he or she had believed that the identity of the defendant (the other party) was of critical importance because a plain belief is not adequate.5 The common law has identified only three forms of mistakes that can arise from a contract: the common mistake, the mutual mistake, and the unilateral mistake. From this identification it is clear that the mistake of identity does not exist. It is important to point out that none of the identified mistakes has adequately covered mistake of identity. This explains why there has been increasing concern regarding the description of the case by law as being unsatisfactory.6 A closer look of the case law shows that mista ken identity cases are few in number and do not occur in increasing frequency like the other types of mistakes. Nonetheless, this does not mean that mistaken identity is not a critical legal aspect in law of contract. As a matter of fact, mistaken identity cases are very crucial as they (just like other types of mistakes) amount to breach of contract if they occur and therefore it is important that it is addressed once and for all. Besides, a key objective of law is to achieve equity and justice. As such, failing to remedy the â€Å"sorry condition† of law covering mistaken identity cases will defeat the very of law as it may lead to unjust rulings.7 Often, cases of mistaken identity happen in simple contracts, that is, contracts formed without involvement of any legal formalities. Partnership agreements and sale of goods contract mostly take the dimension of simple contracts. Sales of goods are the most prone and mistaken identity cases frequently arise from sale of goods co ntract. The principle of nemo dat non quod habet forms the major interplay in the mistaken identity cases.
